Nach der Verlobung werden Maxwell und Fran zu einem der großen gesellschaftlichen Ereignisse des Jahres eingeladen. Doch vor Ort erfährt Fran, dass sie nur eingeladen wurde, damit man hinter ihrem Rücken über sie lästern kann. Niles macht sich indes einen Spaß daraus, C.C. zu quälen und ihr die bevorstehende Hochzeit von Fran und Maxwell immer wieder unter die Nase zu reiben.
Fran macht sich Sorgen, ob sie nach der Hochzeit mit Maxwell ihre Arbeit aufgeben muss und beschließt, ihm bei seinem neuesten Broadway-Stück zu unterstützen. Hilfe kann Maxwell im Moment gut gebrauchen, denn er ist auf der Suche nach einem Rapper, der seiner Aufführung eine moderne, hippe Note verleiht. Doch bald ist sich Fran nicht mehr so sicher, ob es eine gute Idee war, sich einzumischen.
Kurz vor der Hochzeit erhält Maxwell die Nachricht, dass sein Vater gestorben ist. Da der Broadway-Produzent fest damit gerechnet hatte, einen Teil des Vermögens seines Vaters zu erben, staunt er bei der Testamentseröffnung nicht schlecht. Sein Vater James hatte eine uneheliche Tochter, der er sein gesamtes Geld vermacht hat, während die leiblichen Kinder leer ausgehen.
Maxwell wird von seiner Familie unter Druck gesetzt, dass Fran einen Ehevertrag unterschreiben soll, doch es fällt ihm schwer, ihr davon zu erzählen. Als sie die Wahrheit schließlich erfährt, weigert sie sich und zieht beleidigt von dannen. Kurze Zeit später wird Brighton nach einem Skate-Unfall ins Krankenhaus eingeliefert, doch da Fran nicht zur Familie gehört, darf sie ihn nicht besuchen.
Fran ist entsetzt, als sie hört, dass Maxwells Bruder Nigel zur Hochzeit kommen wird, denn sie fürchtet, dass er alte Geschichten ausplaudern könnte. Niles versucht indes, Mr. Sheffield dazu zu bewegen, ihn zu seinem Trauzeugen zu machen. Beim Junggesellenabschied rutscht Nigel schließlich heraus, dass er eine Affäre mit Fran hatte, woraufhin Maxwell überlegt, die Hochzeit abzusagen.
Am Abend vor der Hochzeit kann Maxwell sein Verlangen nach Fran kaum mehr im Zaum halten, doch die Braut fürchtet, dass es Unglück bringen könnte, wenn er sie vor der Hochzeit sehen würde. Um kein Risiko einzugehen, verbringt Fran ihren letzten Abend als unverheiratete Frau daher mit ihrer Mutter und Val. Doch die abergläubische Fran macht sich dennoch Sorgen wegen ihrer Hochzeit.
Kurz vor der Hochzeit erklärt Maxwells Schwester, dass die Ehe zwischen ihrem Bruder und Fran nicht halten wird, da die Unterschiede zwischen ihnen zu groß seien. Auch C.C. versucht alles, um die Hochzeit zwischen Maxwell und Fran zu verhindern. Als Fran sich weigert, vor den Traualtar zu treten, da die Ehe ihrer Meinung nach in einer Katastrophe endet, muss Maxwell sich etwas einfallen lassen.
Endlich sind Fran und Maxwell verheiratet, doch die Flitterwochen werden schnell zum Alptraum. Nachdem Fran über Bord der Yacht gefallen ist und Maxwell mit einem beherzten Sprung versucht hat, sie zu retten, wachen die beiden am nächsten Morgen an der Küste einer unbewohnten Insel auf. Während die zwei versuchen, dort zu überleben, machen sich zuhause in New York alle schreckliche Sorgen um sie.
Kaum sind Fran und Maxwell wieder in New York, beschwert sich Max darüber, dass ihm Fran im Bett zu laut ist. Die ehemalige Nanny ist so beleidigt, dass sie zu ihrer Mutter fährt. Während Sylvia ihrer Tochter die Weisheit mit auf den Weg gibt, dass die Basis einer guten Ehe der Kompromiss ist, empfiehlt Niles seinem Chef, etwas lockerer zu sein. Ob die Ratschläge die Beziehungskrise lösen können?
Obwohl Maxwell und Fran inzwischen schon länger verheiratet sind, sieht der Broadway-Produzent in seiner neuen Ehefrau weiterhin das Kindermädchen. Um das zu ändern, stellt Fran kurzerhand eine neue Nanny ein und versucht, für sich selbst eine passende Beschäftigung zu finden. Doch ein Leben als Dame der Gesellschaft im Country-Club stellt sich als nicht so spannend heraus wie gedacht.
Maxwell fürchtet, dass die Eltern seiner verstorbenen Frau Sara nicht mit Fran einverstanden sein könnten und möchte, dass Fran einen guten Eindruck macht. Bei einem gemeinsamen Essen kommt Fran bei ihnen aber nicht sonderlich gut an. Die Situation gerät jedoch vollends außer Kontrolle, als die beiden erfahren, dass Fran ihre drei Enkelkinder Maggie, Brighton und Gracie adoptieren möchte.
Maxwell wünscht sich, dass Fran ein besseres Vorbild für die Kinder wäre. Maggie macht sich indes Sorgen, dass ihr Vater sie beim ersten gemeinsamen Abendessen mit ihrem neuen Freund blamieren könnte. Während Maxwell vom neuen Freund seiner Tochter wenig begeistert ist, hat Fran weniger Probleme mit ihm, schließlich verdient Michael als Unterwäschemodell eine Menge Geld und ist obendrein Jude.
Fran fällt aus allen Wolken, als sie Maggie und deren Freund Michael im Bett erwischt. Doch als wäre das nicht schlimm genug, vertraut Maggie ihrem ehemaligen Kindermädchen kurze Zeit später an, dass sie fürchtet, schwanger zu sein. Obwohl Fran alles versucht, um die Geschichte vor Maxwell geheim zu halten, erfährt der schließlich, welches Geheimnis die beiden Frauen teilen.
Fran will den richtigen Moment abpassen, um Maxwell von der Schwangerschaft zu berichten, doch für sich behalten kann sie die Nachricht auch nicht. Nachdem sie ihrer Mutter Sylvia davon erzählt hat, weiß auch schon Niles Bescheid. Wie lange wird sich die Sache so geheim halten lassen? Brighton soll indes mit Yetta ins Kino gehen, verliert die Dame aber und macht sich schreckliche Sorgen um sie.

Fran will unbedingt schwanger werden und treibt alle in den Wahnsinn, da sie kein anderes Thema mehr kennt. Um sie ein wenig abzulenken, schlägt Maxwell ein Ski-Wochenende mit den Kindern im luxuriösen Aspen vor. Eigentlich hat Fran keine Lust, doch sie ändert ihre Meinung, als sie erfährt, dass sie als Gäste des US-Präsidenten Bill Clinton zu einem Abendessen eingeladen sind.
