Frans Tante Freida hat nicht nur ihren Nachtclub verloren, sondern auch ihre Wohnung und ist auf der Suche nach einer neuen Bleibe. Umso überraschter sind Sylvia und Fran, als sie kurze Zeit später Freidas wohlhabenden neuen Freund kennenlernen, der sämtliche Geldprobleme lösen könnte. Doch es gibt ein Problem: Fred fürchtet, zu langweilig für die lebenslustige Freida zu sein.
Zufällig läuft Maxwell seinem Vater in die Arme, den er schon lange nicht mehr gesehen hat. Da die beiden kein gutes Verhältnis zueinander haben, versucht Fran, die Wogen zu glätten und lädt heimlich Maxwells Vater zum Essen ein. Der Abend gerät aber schnell zur Katastrophe, denn Maxwell hat seinem Vater in all den Jahren nicht verziehen, dass er seine Mutter verlassen hat.
Fran erhält von C.C. den Auftrag, auf Jay Lenos Hund aufzupassen, weil das Hotel des Stars in New York keine Hunde duldet. Doch die Konzentration der Nanny leidet, denn ihr steht eine Steuerprüfung ins Haus. Da sie es mit den korrekten Angaben in der Steuererklärung in den letzten Jahren nicht sonderlich genau nahm, ist guter Rat nun teuer. Ob Maxwell sie auch dieses Mal retten kann?
Während Fran des Lebens im Hause Sheffield langsam überdrüssig wird, bekommt ihr Chef vor lauter Arbeit nichts davon mit. Als überraschend Maxwells kleiner Bruder Nigel auftaucht, ist das für das Kindermädchen eine willkommene Abwechslung. Auch Nigel gefällt die Zeit mit Fran so gut, dass er ihr kurz vor seiner Rückreise nach Europa aus heiterem Himmel einen Heiratsantrag macht.
Maggie braucht die Hilfe ihrer Nanny, denn sie will unbedingt eine Tätowierung, benötigt dafür aber die Einverständniserklärung ihres Vaters. Als Fran sich weigert, ihr zu helfen, platzt Val mit der Information heraus, dass sich Fran als Teenager selbst ein Tattoo stechen ließ. Diese Nachricht überrascht alle, doch besonders Maxwell ist daran interessiert, wo genau das geheime Tattoo sein könnte.
Maggie möchte zu ihrem Geburtstag ein Auto, doch Maxwell will ihr keinen Wagen schenken. Kurzerhand nimmt Fran daher an einem Schönheitswettbewerb teil, bei dem es ein Auto zu gewinnen gibt. Doch für den ersten Preis muss sie lernen, wie man mit einer Gangschaltung fährt. Zudem erfährt das Kindermädchen, dass Barbra Streisands Schwester mit Maxwell für eine Wohltätigkeitsveranstaltung probt.
Eigentlich wollte Fran sich ein paar Tage von Maxwell erholen, doch ihr Urlaub mit Val gerät bald zur Katastrophe. Kaum haben sich die beiden in ihrem Urlaubsresort etwas eingerichtet, erreicht die beiden eine Hurrikan-Warnung und sie sind gezwungen, in ihrer Hütte zu bleiben. Als Sylvia von dem Sturm erfährt, macht sie Maxwell schwere Vorwürfe, denn nur seinetwegen ist ihre Tochter nun in Gefahr.
Maxwells Großmutter hat ihren Besuch angekündigt und treibt dem Broadway-Produzenten mit dieser Nachricht den Schweiß auf die Stirn. Die betagte und extrem wohlhabende Dame droht nämlich damit, jeden zu enterben, der ihren hohen Ansprüchen nicht genügt. Ob Nanny Fine bei ihr gut ankommt? Die hat derweil ganz andere Probleme, denn ihr ehemaliger Verlobter Danny ist überraschend gestorben.
Fran lernt kurz vor der Hochzeit ihrer Cousine einen netten Mann kennen, der geradezu perfekt scheint. Während das Kindermädchen immer mehr Zeit mit Bob verbringt, versucht Val, in C.C. eine neue Freundin zu finden, doch die ist von Vals Art alles andere als begeistert. Als Fran wenig später auf der Hochzeit ihrer Cousine überraschend auf Bob trifft, verschlägt es nicht nur ihr die Sprache.
Fran besucht inzwischen regelmäßig ihren Therapeuten und erhält von ihm den Ratschlag, sich von den Männern fernzuhalten, bis sie ihre Probleme in den Griff bekommen hat. Als ihre Mutter Sylvia von diesem Plan erfährt, droht sie, sich umzubringen, da ihre Tochter so nie jemanden zum Heiraten finden wird. Beim Versuch, als Single-Frau auszugehen, gerät aber auch Fran bald an ihre Grenzen.
Fran ist sauer, als sie Maxwell dabei erwischt, wie er mit einer attraktiven Frau von einer Party zurückkehrt. Als er ihr klar macht, dass sie nur das Kindermädchen ist und nicht seine Ehefrau, wendet sie sich ratsuchend an ihren Therapeuten. Die Dinge werden allerdings kompliziert, als Fran Dr. Miller zufällig im Kino begegnet und Maxwell die falschen Schlüsse aus Frans Andeutungen zieht.
Sylvia fürchtet, dass der neue Freund ihrer Mutter nur hinter ihrem Geld her ist und will auf der Bank dafür sorgen, dass Yetta keine Schecks mehr alleine ausstellen darf. Doch ausgerechnet als sie mit ihrer Tochter Fran am Valentinstag in der Bankfiliale ist, um die Angelegenheit zu regeln, wird diese überfallen. Als Maxwell davon erfährt, macht er sich umgehend auf den Weg zur Bank.
Maxwell weigert sich weiterhin standhaft, Fran nochmals seine Liebe zu gestehen. Zum Glück gibt es Ablenkung für Fran, denn sie begleitet C.C. bei ihrem Geschworenendienst und wird schließlich als Jury-Mitglied in einem aufsehenerregenden Prozess eingesetzt. Da die Nanny nun den ganzen Tag im Gerichtssaal sitzen muss, engagiert Niles kurzerhand Sylvia, damit sie sich um die Kinder kümmert.
Fran hat in Niles' Wäsche einen Zettel gefunden, den sie für das Geständnis eines Mordes hält und vermutet, dass der Butler in Wahrheit ein skrupelloser Killer ist. Während sie und ihre Großmutter Yetta es fortan unter allen Umständen vermeiden, allein mit Niles zu sein, sind das nicht Frans einzige Probleme. Die Kinder haben nämlich Kopfläuse mit nach Hause gebracht, die es zu beseitigen gilt.
Überraschend meldet sich eine Frau bei Fran, die behauptet, ihre Mutter zu sein. Auch wenn Fran das zuerst nicht glauben will, freundet sie sich schließlich mit dem Gedanken an, vor allem als sie erfährt, dass die Frau in einer der besten Gegenden der Stadt wohnt. Als die zwei das erste Mal aufeinandertreffen, ist die Überraschung groß. Doch so leicht lässt sich Sylvia die Tochter nicht wegnehmen.
