Als Professor setzt Ted (Josh Radnor) nun auch auf einen neuen Look. Leider muss er wider Erwarten feststellen, dass sein Tweed-Outfit Frauen total abtörnt.
Ted (Josh Radnor) und Marshall (Jason Segel) wollen ihrer ehemaligen Lieblingspizzeria in Chikago einen letzten Besuch abstatten. Aber Marshalls Frau Lily verdirbt den Jungs den Spaß.
Fran erfährt, dass Bette Midler eine Wohltätigkeitsauktion leitet, die von Maxwell organisiert wird. Um Geld für einen guten Zweck zu sammeln, bietet Fran sich selbst an und wird am Ende als Kindermädchen für den Sohn des reichen Philanthropen Tom Rosenstein ersteigert. Doch ein Nachmittag mit dem Kindermädchen verstört den Jungen derart, dass nicht nur Maxwells berufliche Zukunft in Gefahr gerät.
Fran hat keine Lust, Maxwell und die Kinder nach Hawaii zu begleiten und dabei nur als die Nanny zu gelten. Als Val und sie das Angebot bekommen, nach Kalifornien zu fliegen, wo Heather Biblow eine Rolle in einer Fernsehserie bekommen hat, machen sich die beiden sofort auf den Weg. Vor Ort überzeugt Fran am TV-Set den Rest der Crew von ihren schauspielerischen Qualitäten und erhält Heathers Rolle.
Eigentlich war das immer Frans großer Traum, doch als sie erfährt, dass ihre Mutter nun eine Eigentumswohnung in Florida kaufen und wegziehen will, ist sie entsetzt. Nach einem längeren Gespräch mit ihrem Therapeuten versucht sie, die Trennung von ihrer Mutter auch als Chance zu betrachten. Maxwell wurde indes gebeten, als Juror bei der nächsten Wahl zur Miss Universe zu fungieren.
Maxwell staunt nicht schlecht, als während seiner Geschäftsreise in London plötzlich Nanny Fine in seinem Hotelzimmer steht. Auch wenn er sie im ersten Moment am liebsten wegschicken würde, willigt er schließlich ein, sich mit ihr die Stadt anzusehen. Gerade als die beiden fast miteinander im Bett landen, klingelt plötzlich das Telefon: Niles hatte einen Herzinfarkt.
Fran und Maxwell sind sich im Krankenhaus nähergekommen, wissen danach aber beide nicht, wie es weitergehen soll. Während Fran von einer gemeinsamen Zukunft träumt, will Maxwell sich erst einmal Zeit erkaufen und beauftragt Fran mit der Renovierung der Küche, damit sie beschäftigt ist. Auf Silvias Ratschlag hin bittet Fran ihre Cousine Sheila, eine Innendekorateurin, um Hilfe bei dem Projekt.
Droht, verdammt peinlich zu werden für die Nanny: „Mein Date mit Elton John. Fran begleitet Maxwell zur Filmpremiere von „Tantrum & Tiaras“, einer Doku über Popsänger Elton John. Den hatte Fran einst getroffen, doch der Star hegt keine guten Erinnerungen an sie… Neben Elton John ist auch sein Lebensgefährte David Furnish zu sehen.
Brighton hat bei einem Wettbewerb gewonnen und nun soll eine Band einen Teil ihres neuen Musikvideos im Haus der Sheffields drehen. Während Maxwell wenig begeistert ist, freut sich Fran riesig. Die Überraschung ist groß, als plötzlich die Plattenchefin auftaucht und Maxwell um den Hals fällt. Die beiden kennen sich von früher und schnell fürchtet Fran, dass diese Frau ihr den Mann ausspannen will.
Fran braucht Geld und nimmt dankbar C.C.s Angebot an, deren Hund Chester gegen Bezahlung auszuführen. Doch bei einem Spaziergang im Park verschwindet der Vierbeiner spurlos. Als Fran erfährt, dass Hundediebe in der Gegend ihr Unwesen treiben und kurze Zeit später eine Lösegeldforderung eingeht, setzt sie alles daran, Chester zurückzuholen und begibt sich dabei selbst in Gefahr.
Maxwell hat genug davon, dass Niles immer so neugierig ist und feuert ihn kurzerhand. Der Butler findet eine andere Anstellung, und zwar bei Frans Tante Freida, die die Vorzüge eines Dieners zu schätzen weiß. Indes streiten sich C.C. und Fran darüber, wer von ihnen die bessere Partnerin für Maxwell wäre, und engagieren die Psychologin Dr. Joyce Brothers, die ihnen bei dieser Frage helfen soll.
Maxwell will sich den Comedian Chevy Chase live anschauen und lädt kurzerhand seine ganze Familie, inklusive C.C., Niles und Miss Fine, zu einem Besuch in Atlantic City ein, wo der Künstler gerade in einer Show auftritt. Als Maxwell den Komiker kennenlernt, ist der direkt von der erfrischend ehrlichen und witzigen Nanny fasziniert und lädt sie zu einem Date ein, was Maxwell nicht gefällt.
Fran und Val hatten zu Schulzeiten eine kambodschanische Waise adoptiert und ihr regelmäßig Geld geschickt. Inzwischen ist aus dem Mädchen eine junge Frau geworden, die ihre Gönner besuchen will. Bei einem Gespräch mit dem Philosophie-Professor stellt sich schnell heraus, dass er kein Interesse an Studentinnen hat, doch der gutaussehende Mann bittet schließlich Fran um ein Date.
Maxwell hat ein Problem. Versehentlich hat er sowohl Fran als auch Niles über das Wochenende freigegeben, sodass keiner auf die Kinder aufpassen kann. Als weder der Butler noch das Kindermädchen freiwillig auf ihre freien Tage verzichten wollen, kommt es zum Streit. Schließlich stimmt Maxwell zu, Fran mit den Kindern zu einem Familientreffen der Fines an die Niagara-Fällen zu begleiten.
Val hat Karten für die Präsentation der neuen Opernplatte des Sängers Michael Bolton.
