Kurz darauf erleiden die Mitglieder des SG-Teams eine Art Schock und verlieren das Bewusstsein. Während sich Teal'c, Jack O'Neill und Sam Carter schnell wieder erholen, geht es Daniel zunehmend schlechter
Die Föderation unterhält auf Elba II ein Sanatorium für Geisteskranke. Dort ist auch der ehemalige Flottenkommandant Garth untergebracht. Er träumt davon, Herrscher des Universums zu werden. Durch einen Trick nimmt er Kirk und Spock gefangen.
Picard wird von den Cardassianern körperlich und seelisch brutal gefoltert. Dennoch können sie keine Zugeständnisse von ihm erzwingen. Die Enterprise setzt unter dem Kommando von Captain Jellico alles daran, Picard aus den Händen der Cardassianer zu befreien.

Dabei sieht Byers seine Bekannte Suzanne Modesky wieder, die vor zehn Jahren von Geheimdienstlern entführt wurde. Byers bitte Scully um Hilfe.
Am Fundort zweier verwester Skelette stoßen Mulder (David Duchovny) und Scully auf grüne Schleimspuren. Mysteriös, denn das Paar wird erst seit drei Tagen vermisst. Die Agenten ahnen nicht, dass sie sich schon infiziert haben: „Sporen“.
