Japanese director Inoue Umetsugu takes on the glitzy world of nightclub performers in The Yellow Muffler. The film depicts the struggle of two singing sisters, Chingping Irene Chen Iling and Paihung Betty Ting Pei and ends when they are cast in a new movie.

A young singer Hsiao Yun becomes an overnight sensation after standing in for another singer at the eleventh hour. Her success comes at a heavy price however, when her love with a pianist suffers. On top of this, Hsiao Yun must also deal with the unwanted affections from an influential backer of her show.
